Trying to convince your family into taking up a healthier lifestyle may seem challenging but it’s achievable if you do it the right way.
As I always say Skool Girls, there’s method in the magic. Three words ‘creative thinking’ and ‘perseverance’. Read and learn.
1.Passion is infectious and everyone buys it. If you’re family can see how joyous and enthusiastic you are about maintaining a healthier lifestyle, they’ll soon feel the conviction to follow suit…sometimes without even realising. I always believe that actions speak louder than words, it’s not about preaching good health at your family every five seconds, just simply do you and lead by example. You may think they don’t notice your early morning jogs, the cardio workouts, the fact that you’ve swapped chips for a side salad, but they do and seeing a pattern of consistency in your healthy habits is enough to eventually motivate them.
2. What’s an activity that all the family can enjoy together…Bike riding perhaps? My family have recently started attending circuit training together, although I wouldn’t recommend this is the easiest way to entice your family into the ‘love of exercise’. The point is, doing things on your own isn’t always motivating, but when there’s two or more of you, there is a stronger support system and most importantly accountability. Furthermore, this is a great way for you and the family to bond. I’d even say, why not take it a step further and create competition prizes for extra incentives, who doesn’t like a free gift?
3. Sports is not everyone’s cup of tea, but how about a sports activity with interest? Summer’s here, team up with your best friends family and arrange a game of Rounder’s in your local park. Losing team has to treat everyone to lunch. See I just practically handed you a solution on a plate…no excuses!
4. There’s nothing like going back to basics. Remember the days of tig and tag, stuck in the mud, British bull dog? It’s time to resurrect the inner child in you once again, take your family to the back garden, local park or a space that’s big enough for you to play some simple, fun games. Hey, you may not be swinging a bat or hitting a ball, but these games will certainly keep everyone moving.
