While October was a phenomenal experience of looking back and learning about the impact and legacy of history’s greatest leaders, events and innovators to educational films, traditional drinks, afro hair and shadeism…it’s time to fast forward to NOW o’clock and get back 2 business!
Yep you guessed right, November is all about getting your head down and getting on it with it. No more distractions, idleness, the ‘I can’t be bothered-ness’or complaining about how tired you are. No one cares…JUST DO IT!
On Monday 13 October, I celebrated my 21st birthday and I was determined to give such an occasion the recognition it deserved. I entered my new world of adulthood in true style and threw a 90’s themed birthday bash…it was awesome! The music, throwback outfits, reunions with old friends. Moments after…I came home and cleared my phone contact list of 100+ names. ‘I had my fun’ I thought, ‘and now it’s time to get rid of all things unnecessary(including numbers casually decorating my phone) and get on with my life.
Who knew that the transition to adulthood could be so refreshing?
There comes a point in your life when you just need to ‘do what you gotta do’, like many I was once the sucker who spent my time caring all too much about everyone else, making it a priority to send ‘How are you?’texts, make the‘just checking up on you’phone calls and‘just reminding you I still care about you’fly by house visits…and now I actually have a life! Never get tired of doing the right thing, it’s okay to do all of the things above but reality is time is constantly moving. If you are spending your time engrossed in everyone else’ life…How can you ensure that you are spending adequate time to invest in your own?
Success is a matter of focus, WORK, determination, WORK, perseverance, WORK, consistency, and more WORK, WORK, WORK! - Since starting my new job as a Broadcast Assistant at the BBC I can certainly testify to this – my life has resorted to media law, the composition of The Government and Teeline.
Shara said to me one evening ‘I’m tired of trying to be successful.’
My response was: ‘It’s not about trying, it’s about enjoying the journey. Success is about taking life one accomplishment and one day at a time.’
What I really wanted to say is, ‘SUCK IT UP SISTER!’
But no really, every day we wake up we are blessed with 24 hours and given the choice to do with them as we please. This is serious freedom. What we do with these hours determines what we can achieve. So in a nutshell, your success is your choice. You work for it; you earn it, simple. Many of you are falling into the awful habit of expecting overnight victory, I personally blame social media for this. Everything is instantaneous, the click of a button and we can share what we ate for breakfast or what we really thought about Lola’s destruction of Whitney and Mariah’s song on X-Factor. If you’re not careful you can get dragged into a false reality of ‘social media land’ forgetting to acknowledge that ‘reality’doesn’t actually work like this.
In the famous words of Booker T Washington “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.”
There is nothing like wiping the sweat off your brow when you have ran the swift race of endurance, I mean let’s be honest success is not as fun without the occasional knock backs, bumps and hurdles. Trust me; they are just as much necessary as they are inconvenient.
It’s time to grace your November with a new working attitude, it’s not just the month after Black History or the month before Christmas, it’s THEmonth where all your hard work is about to pay off. So all that’s left to say is, LET’S DO THIS!
Yours truly
